I DON’T WANNA FEEL THAT WAY – MARO & NASAYA

Album art by Louie Jacob (@louie.jacob)

Let’s goooooo!!!! We’re back with another post about another record in the Vinyl Room.

This time we’re spinning an EP titled I DON’T WANNA FEEL THAT WAY by Portuguese producer NASAYA and singer-songwriter MARO.

Early January 2025, Apple Music recommended this project to me, newly released — probably because I kept “Leaveyourlove (with MARO)” by Parcels on repeat.

It was a cold afternoon and the northern winds were wilding while I dusted all of the instruments in the actual, physical vinyl room (at my parents’ place), listening to MARO & NASAYA’s EP for the first time on my headphones. And I caught bronchitis!

But before the prescription codeine and the chilling sweaty fever dreams, I was dusting euphorically, listening to this EP, crying, dancing, freaking out as I felt it change my life.

Listen for yourself

Here, listen. Here, hear.

I got tickets to see MARO & NASAYA at El Rey Theatre with my BFF Angelique (Angie) on February 7th, 2025. The venue location had changed between the day I got the tickets and the day of the show, so we accidentally Ubered to the wrong spot, got picked up again by the same driver, made friends with her, and missed the first half of the set, but danced the roof off for the rest.

If you like melancholy lyrics over danceable beats, you’ll love this EP.

Play along as I listen to each song and write a stream of consciousness response to the music in real time.

I DON’T WANNA FEEL THAT WAY

I got nothing I have or I want or I wish to say.
Tulips
A field of them

Kicking my feet back down as I walk
Up a path that curves through the center of the
Where?

The dust I send up turns into puffs of rust turned into fairies
Their sparkly sprinkles drifting over into tear ducts and pores
Granting grandmother wishes
Softly rub the petal medicine into the shell
The sands
The herbal honesty running through our furs

All my pollen is being carried away
By the wind
Fluff
Holding onto the rim
Flush
A ground disintegrates
A great big spiral
Scales that always flake and peel away
Sounds that escape
Heaven

WE COULD BE

I could do more than write you songs
We could give it a chance and see where it goes
Always there
Seeing
Ugly
Sneers
Spirits
Hover
Scurry
Scramble
Loiter
Fumble
Fear
Leer
Poor thing

How you’d hate
To be described
In this light

How you’d hate
To be shot in the
Name of stalker

This is the picture
Developed in my mind

Snap it or not
The question is why are you

Always there

LIFELINE

One day I will reach the end.
How often do you think about your death?
How often do you think about your dead friends?

You ever wonder what will become of your people?
You ever wonder how many more?

Cycles to go
Cycles to transcend

Do you remember where the end is and how we’ll find it?
Do you remember who knows about what’s to know?

CHIQUITITA

I don’t know how to embrace it all.
I know it’s normal but I can’t let go.

Crowds of peacocks fill the halls, the bars, wagging their hips, feathers flying into the branches. Each one is a quill, and the writing on the walls says: the heart of a bedroom is the body of a lineage.

CRYCRYCRY

You swear we’ll make it work but then things just die.

quantum leap — there is no “back” — long ago — is — now

Real talk. THIS. BEAT. GOT. DAMN.

Wow. Start it from the top?

A song I didn’t recognize started playing so I noticed it was the end, then I looked at the track list and realized I’d had it on shuffle.

Well, I enjoyed this sequence.

Listen to the I DON’T WANNA FEEL THAT WAY – EP in the order it was made, then listen to it in any order a bunch more.

I’m on Instagram, I’m on Substack, and I’m right here!

Take care — till next time in the Vinyl Room.

Lotsa Love,
MECHE
